I think this meme explains a lot about rhetoric in everyday life. You see so many social media posts that people take literally when they are not meant that away. When someone says something literally they are saying it to basically tell a story, but when its meant rhetorically they are using their emotions or persuasion techniques to get you to feel a certain way. When you see a post on social media or hear someone talk about something next time, think of the way its meant to be portrayed. Is it literal or rhetorical.

Taking things literally is especially hard over text. Things such as sarcasm as well expressed in person and through voice but when it is words on a screen things are taken differently than they should be. People rarely say the literal meaning of their words and use various things such as sarcasm or rhetoric to add meaning behind them. This can make written word confusing to read because it does not voice the tone well.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. It is quite difficult when you can not tell what type of tone they are speaking of when it is over text. Some people confuse other’s texts, because they can not understand if they are being literal or rhetorical, and I think that can cause a little bit of unnecessary drama.
