Have you ever been in this situation where you receive a message, but you can't tell the real meaning behind it?

Language today has changed from what it was before. Generation by generation, new words, abbreviations and pronunciations evolve, which can be a great thing, but also a negative thing.

In today's world, the change in language is often created by technology users; when texting/emailing, some prefer to use abbreviations rather than typing the whole phrase. For example, "on my way" is often sent as "omw", which can be quite confusing for those unfamiliar with it. In addition, sometimes those who prefer texting over phone calls can confuse others by simply doing nothing but sending the text. Sometimes it's hard to understand the tone behind a message; are they angry or excited? Joking or serious? These questions often arise because there is no way to tell the tone of a message by just reading it. This can cause issues if not cleared up, and can also cause negative views on language development.

Overall, changes in language have and will continue to change as our world grows, so be prepared for new letter combinations to come through your phone in the future!

  1. I have seen this play out in my own life with many more abbreviated words, new slang and such. Not only in my life time but more so in my parents lifetimes and far more in their parents life times. Hyper Political correctness is something my parents have seen as they shifted towards using words like mentally handicapped or LGBT instead of their counter parts which I cannot type in this blog. But to conclude, I agree it is strange and exciting to see the shift from language of yesteryear to today.

  2. I actually love this post! This happens in day to day lives and it needs to be changed. I never know when someone is angry or laughing when they use lol in the wrong situation or what the knew changes in the "slang" that are being used in todays society

  3. I really enjoyed this post because I think this is something that is apart of our everyday lives. Sometimes it is hard to understand what people are meaning when they are using slang and it's hard to determine what type of emotion they're using.

  4. Language is also changed based on how you say something. People are sarcastic for example which changes the meaning of the words. This makes texts for example more difficult for people to read because they not only need to understand the language the person used but they also need to understand HOW the person used the language.
